Chris, this is truly a great description of your life time experience. I happy to read your travel in detail. I hope you are clear about your identity and National Identity. Tell us your future plans...... let me give you a cue; you should do this may be in a smaller scale in all the continents. You are through with N America and go to Europe and for Asia do it in China. I do not have to tell you about Africa, but i were you I would travel the Northern Coast line of Africa starting from Suez.
What ever you do wish you the best of everything.

Best
Tahir

Couldn't agree more, Skip. Being an American is a state of mind. That's how the fellow who attempted the Times Square bombing could be a naturalized citizen but not really an American, because a real American does not choose that method to communicate his displeasure to society. Civil society, in our own precarious and complex balance, coined in the phrase e pluribus unum, remains one of our great strengths.

I've heard the phrase that being British or French is a matter of
heritage, but being American is basically an ideal. Anyone can become
American.

So being an American is a matter of paperwork :-) Being a patriotic American means that one thinks of more than oneself, but certainly, being patriotic is not a requirement for citizenship.

I'm not sure how to answer the second question. America is the current super power, and a lot of resentment automatically comes with that. But most of the rest of the world will continue on its course with or without us. Our ability to help people is more limited than we once thought.

Having said that, I still think that most of the rest of the world is pulling itself forward, and some of that is due to following some of our better examples. So I guess the best thing we can do is to just try to be the best America we can be.

Hi Chris,

I'm so desperate to give you company on your way all across the nation, but as you know, things are keeping me busy over here. Anyway, I do understand the purpose of your trip, it's not only being on two wheels, but to get to a point of greater understanding.

Rediscovering your american identity begun in 1993, when you finally left Germany and went back to the States. That in my opinion, was the most valuable and difficult time in your life (and a very important one too) to find something you surely benefit from untill today.

I'm looking forward to hearing what people will answer to your two questions. I expect very "american" answers, but let's see what comes along.

Again, I'm totally unhappy not to be able to ride with you. Will you do it again, sometime? With me?

Andreas
